Since the middle ages, the phrase “clothes make the man” has appeared in literature. However, clothes also make the woman. As artifacts, period clothing can offer a window into history: what was a woman like, why did she have to dress a certain way, why did she choose to dress a certain way, and how was she perceived? Clothes can tell us about culture, race, socioeconomic circumstances, and the gender-based politics of a particular historical period.
Come hear pieces inspired by The Ebell of Los Angeles clothing archives — and written by playwriting alumni of the University of Southern California’s Master of Fine Arts in Dramatic Writing program as part of the Clothes Make the Woman project designed by Ebell CEO Dr. Stacy Brightman and Dr. Velina Hasu Houston.
