The 1989 Booker Prize-winning novel The Remains of the Day, by Kazuo Ishiguro, offers readers a portrait of Stevens, the perfect butler, and of his fading, insular world in post-World War II England. Stevens reflects on his life of service at Darlington Hall — particularly his misguided loyalty to his former employer, Lord Darlington, and his repressed relationship with the housekeeper, Miss Kenton, during a road trip in 1956. A poignant exploration of dignity, duty, regret, and the search for meaning in a life dedicated to a "great gentleman" whose own moral failings become apparent in hindsight.
The Remains of the Day also inspired the 1993 film of the same name, starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson.
